Here are four easy and essential steps you should take when buying your domain name and choosing your new brand and business name :
1) Think about the domain name you want, you don’t have to be precise, but remember this is how the world will recognise you, so put some effort into it.
2) Find your domain and purchase it – if you like it at the first sight it is a lot easier to build brand on it as you will not only look at it, but over time start to love it and that will reflect upon your business and customers.
3) Choose the domain name before your choose the name of your business, because the latter can be flexible, the former may not be.
4) Consider a .com extension. That doesn’t mean you can’t buy a .net and/or a .biz too, but .com is THE standard for a commercial undertaking and any business that wants to build their own brand.
You could be asking yourself, should I start my new business with a .com domain or go for an alternative if I can buy it cheaper? That is a very important question to ask – but short answer is yes, you should chose .com in the first place. Here are a few pointers to help you decide.
If you go with alternative extension (.biz, .club, .diamond, .net, .org, .tv) you should ask yourself will I just get lost in the crowd? With all the new and upcoming extensions, will my traffic leak to more popular extensions, and will I be recognised?
While the initial cost of domain acquisition or registration may be lower for .biz, etc, there are other considerations. Some of the new extensions have high renewal fees, while .com renewals are relatively cheap – around $9-12 depending on the registrar. Nor are they likely to increase greatly in the future. For example a .luxury extension costs around $600+ to register; and in a few years you could be paying thousands to renew.
There are of course cheaper domain extensions to be found and acquire, but if you decide to develop on any other extensions you must allow for some of your traffic to leak to a similar .com domain. While that doesn’t necessarily mean you will lose clients, it does mean that the cost of acquiring the right .com domain later will be more expensive or even impossible if the owner decides to sell it to someone else or develop it himself. You must think forward. Are you running a hobby or a business? Are you likely to expand in the future? If you are serious about your business, if you are going to brand your own products or services, it is important to start with most recognisable domain extension in the world: .com.
Do you see any major corporations using alternative extensions? Nike? Facebook? Adidas? Google? Yes, they may have other domains and extensions, but are you visiting Facebook on Facebook.diamond or Nike on Nike.ooo? Buying unrecognisable or unmemorable domain extensions for cheap can be a false economy.
